Lucie Rie
Today on International Women's Day, we are looking at the life of ceramicist Lucie Rie, one of our monthly muses and a woman of inspiration to us.
Born in Vienna in March 1902, Lucie studied pottery under Michael Powolny at Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule School of Arts and Crafts.
Lucie went on the become an award winning potter whose career spanned 60 years and she is best remembered for her bowl and bottle forms.
During and after the war, to make ends meet, she made ceramic buttons and jewellery for couture fashion outlets. Lucie exactly matched ceramic buttons to the colours of the clothing to which they were to be attached stimulating her experimentation and accuracy with glazes.
Her pottery is displayed in collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the York Art Gallery in the UK, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh and British Museum - where Maya first saw her work as a child.
We love her work, its shape and form and the delicacy of her vision. Amazingly Lucie was able to carry on making work well into her 80s at her studio in London.
Today we think of Lucie along with many other inspiration women, past and present.
Happy International Women's day!
